# Items

> The master record for everything you make, buy, or stock: parts, materials, tools, and more.

An **item** is the master record for a finished part, raw material, tool, consumable, fixture, or service. Orders, methods, jobs, and inventory reference it. The **part number** is its readable ID; Alforse uses a separate internal key.

Item type, replenishment system, and tracking type determine whether the item is made or purchased, whether it contributes to stock, and whether units require serial or batch identifiers.

## Fields

FieldType

<details>
  <summary>**Part number**`text`</summary>

  The readable id; with a non-zero revision it reads as `id.rev`.
</details>

<details>
  <summary>**Type**`enum`</summary>

  *Part*, *Material*, *Tool*, *Consumable*, *Service*, or *Fixture*.
</details>

<details>
  <summary>**Replenishment system**`enum`</summary>

  How it's sourced overall: *Buy*, *Make*, or *Buy and Make*.
</details>

<details>
  <summary>**Default method type**`enum`</summary>

  The default per-line fulfillment: *Purchase to Order*, *Pull from Inventory*, or *Make to Order*.
</details>

<details>
  <summary>**Tracking type**`enum`</summary>

  *Inventory*, *Non-Inventory*, *Serial*, or *Batch*.
</details>

<details>
  <summary>**Unit of measure**`reference`</summary>

  The stock unit.
</details>

<details>
  <summary>**Active**`boolean`</summary>

  Whether it can be used on new documents.
</details>

NOTE

**Replenishment system** is the high-level strategy; **default method type** is the line-level default it allows. Choosing *Buy* sets the default method type to *Purchase to Order*, and choosing *Make* sets it to *Make to Order*; choosing *Pull from Inventory* as the default method type sets the replenishment system to *Buy and Make*. A service is only ever *Buy* or *Make*. The two are related but distinct.

## Tracking

The tracking type sets how units are counted. *Inventory* items are quantity-tracked stock; *Non-Inventory* items aren't counted; *Serial* items carry one record per unit; *Batch* items are lot-tracked with their own batch numbers and dates.

## Revisions

Each part revision is a separate item record with the same part number and a different revision. Creating a revision preserves the item used by existing jobs.

A new revision starts as a copy of the revision you created it from, so you don't set it up again. Along with the item's properties and its method, it carries over:

* **Batch Size**, **Scrap Percent**, and lead time
* each location's reordering policy with its parameters, such as the accumulation period and safety stock
* the item group
* the preferred supplier, and every supplier part with its price breaks

Costs, the sale price, and stock are not copied. They belong to the revision they were recorded against. Change anything on the new revision and the old one is left as it was.

NOTE

An item's costing method, one of *Standard*, *Average*, *FIFO*, or *LIFO*, lives on its cost record, not the item itself, and decides how consumption is valued.
